The soundtrack for the Penumbra series was composed by independent Finnish video game and ambient music composer Mikko Tarmia. The Penumbra Soundtrack – Special Edition was released on January 8, 2010 by the record label The Sound of Fiction. It contains 27 tracks composed for all games, including Overture, Black Plague, Requiem, and the original Penumbra tech demo. Story writer Tom Jubert also provided exclusive text and further insight into the Penumbra story. It was available both on CD and by digital download.

Tarmia's work on the soundtracks for the Penumbra series was his first time working with Frictional Games, with his composing tracks for the early tech demo, Penumbra, counting as the very first.
